Google Backup Codes and Passkeys: Sign-In Beyond One Phone
Losing your phone does not automatically mean losing access to your Google Account. Google provides several sign-in and recovery options, including backup codes, passkeys, recovery phone numbers, and security keys. The best approach is to configure more than one option while you can still sign in normally.

Backup codes provide a one-time alternative for 2-Step Verification, while passkeys let you authenticate using a compatible device and its screen lock or biometric verification. Neither method eliminates every recovery risk, so it is important to prepare alternatives and protect the devices and credentials associated with your account.
This guide explains how Google backup codes and passkeys work, how to prepare for a lost phone, and how to evaluate email solutions for personal or business use. It also explains why purchasing an aged Gmail account should not be treated as a substitute for reliable account security.
What Are Google Backup Codes?
Google backup codes are one-time codes that can be used as the second step of 2-Step Verification when your usual verification method is unavailable.
They are particularly useful if you lose your phone, change your phone number, or cannot receive a code through your usual method.
According to Google's official guidance, you can generate a set of 10 backup codes. Each code is eight digits long and becomes inactive after it has been used once. Generating a new set also invalidates the previous set.
Backup codes are different from your account password. They are an alternative verification method, not a replacement for keeping your password and recovery information secure.
How to Create Google Backup Codes
Follow these steps while you still have access to your account.
Sign in to your Google Account.
Open the Security & sign-in section.
Select 2-Step Verification under the available sign-in options.
Find the Backup codes section.
Select the option to generate or obtain backup codes.
Download or print the codes and store them securely.
Google may ask you to verify your identity before allowing changes to your security settings. Available options can vary depending on your account and security configuration.
For the current instructions, consult Google's official “Sign in with backup codes” help page.
Where Should You Store Backup Codes?
Keep your backup codes somewhere separate from the phone you normally use to sign in.
Suitable options may include a securely stored printed copy or an encrypted document in a location you can reach if your phone becomes unavailable.
Avoid leaving the codes in an unprotected note on the same phone they are intended to help you recover from losing.
Do not send backup codes to other people through email, messaging applications, or support conversations. Google warns users not to share them. If you suspect someone has obtained your codes, generate a new set to invalidate the old ones.
What Is a Google Passkey?
A passkey is a sign-in credential that uses public-key cryptography instead of relying on a conventional password alone. Depending on your device, you can authenticate with a fingerprint, facial recognition, or a device screen lock such as a PIN.
Passkeys are designed to provide stronger resistance to phishing than passwords because the credential is associated with the intended service rather than being something you type into an arbitrary website.
Google supports passkeys on compatible computers, phones, and FIDO2 hardware security keys. Device and browser requirements apply.
A passkey does not automatically remove your existing Google Account recovery methods. It adds another sign-in option, subject to the device, account, and configuration involved.
How to Set Up a Passkey
Sign in to the Google Account you want to protect.
Open the account's security settings.
Find Passkeys and security keys in the sign-in options.
Select the option to create a passkey.
Follow the prompts to verify your identity and unlock your device.
Review the list of passkeys associated with your account.
Create passkeys only on devices you personally own and control. Google cautions that anyone who can unlock a device with a passkey may be able to access the associated Google Account.349 Weergaven -

LinkedIn Hibernate Account: What Others See and How Long

A LinkedIn hibernate account lets you take a temporary break without permanently deleting your professional profile. Your profile becomes hidden, your connections remain saved, and you can reactivate the account by signing in after 24 hours. However, your previous posts, comments, messages, recommendations, and endorsements do not all disappear.
This guide explains what LinkedIn hibernation does, what other members can see, how to hibernate and reactivate an account, and how hibernation differs from permanently closing a LinkedIn account.
LinkedIn Hibernate Account: What Does Hibernation Do?
Your Profile Is Hidden Instead of Deleted
LinkedIn offers hibernation as an alternative to closing an account. When you hibernate your profile, it becomes unavailable to other members, including your existing connections.
Your account information and connections are retained. Your previous activity can remain visible under a generic name rather than your personal name and profile photo.
Hibernation is useful when you want to step away from LinkedIn temporarily without permanently removing your professional history.
Who Should Hibernate a LinkedIn Account?
Hibernation may suit people taking a break from professional networking, starting a sabbatical, managing a busy period, or temporarily reducing their online visibility.
However, it may not be the best choice if you are actively looking for a job. A hibernated profile does not appear in LinkedIn searches, including recruiter searches. Potential employers and recruiters may therefore be unable to find your profile.
If you only want to reduce your public visibility, consider adjusting your public profile settings or using LinkedIn's available privacy controls instead.
What Do Other Members See While Your Account Is Hibernated?
Your Profile Is Hidden From Everyone
When your LinkedIn account is hibernated, other members cannot access your profile, including your existing connections. Having a direct link to your profile does not make it accessible while hibernation is active.
Posts, Comments, Messages, and Endorsements
Hibernation does not automatically erase your previous activity.
Depending on the type of activity, other members may continue to see your existing posts, comments, messages, recommendations, and endorsements under the generic name “A LinkedIn member.” Your usual profile photo may also be replaced with a generic icon.
Therefore, hibernation hides your identity and profile page, but it does not necessarily remove everything you previously shared on the platform.
You Will Not Appear in LinkedIn Searches
A hibernated profile does not appear in LinkedIn search results, including LinkedIn Recruiter. This can be helpful if you want to take a break from professional networking.
However, it also means recruiters, hiring managers, and other professionals may not be able to discover your profile while you are away.
Connection and Follower Counts May Change
LinkedIn's inactive-account filtering can exclude hibernated accounts from connection and follower counts. As a result, your connections may temporarily see lower totals while your account is hibernated.
These changes do not necessarily mean that the underlying connections have been permanently deleted.
What Other Members Can See
Your profile: Hidden and inaccessible.
Search results: Your profile does not appear.
Previous posts and comments: May remain visible under “A LinkedIn member.”
Recommendations and endorsements: May remain visible with generic attribution.
Profile photo: Replaced by a generic icon in relevant activity.
Connection and follower counts: May decrease while your account is hibernated.
How to Hibernate Your LinkedIn Account
You can generally hibernate your account through LinkedIn's desktop settings.427 Weergaven -
